Northwestern University is a private research university whose main campus is located along the shore of Lake Michigan in Evanston, IL. Several of its professional schools, such as the Feinberg School of Medicine and the School of Law are located in downtown Chicago. From its founding in 1851 Northwestern has had a high academic reputation with current rankings placing it in the top tier of national universities. Schools and programs of note include the Kellogg School of Management, the Medill School of Journalism, African History, Engineering (particularly Materials Science), and the School of Music. As the only private school in the Big Ten conference, Northwestern students are known for taunting their league rivals with the chant "State School, State School." The Wildcats field 19 intercollegiate teams with standout programs in women's lacrosse and football.
