Founded in 1851, the University of Minnesota trails only Arizona Sate University for the largest student population in the country with nearly 52,000. Such a large student body brings a great breadth and depth to the academic, research, and athletic programs at the U of M. Academics are divided into 16 schools and colleges divided between two campuses. Stand out departments include Chemical Engineering, Geography, and Psychology. The University of Minnesota is a founding member of the Big Ten NCAA athletic conference, and competes in the Western Collegiate Hockey Association for ice hockey. It has one of the nation's top ice hockey programs for both men & women; The U of M is also nationally competitive in wrestling, golf, and volleyball.
